Wikipedia does an excellent job of describing the Karnoven Method:
Target Heart Rate = ((Maximum Heart Rate – Resting Heart Rate) × %Intensity) + Resting Heart Rate
So, for someone with a Maximum Heart Rate of 180 and a Resting Heart Rate of 70 we have two examples:
For A 50% Target Heart Rate: ((180 - 70) × 0.50) + 70 = 125 bpm
For a 85% Target Heart Rate: ((180 - 70) × 0.85) + 70 = 163 bpm
Read his full article for all the details. He will come back with more
... next week we’ll talk about the basics around Resting Heart Rate, Maximum Heart Rate and how to measure them.

First time running in about two weeks. The knee does not feel "normal" but it did not hurt or 'slip' when taking the easy jog on the track tonight. I'll be happy with little steps.
It was dark as I arrived and I expected to be running with my flashlight but the lights came on as a girls team gathered for soccer. It was eerie as the lights gradually brightened up the field spreading from the sidelines into the center and covering end to end, where just seconds before, it was pitch black and dark shadows.

Mostly a reminder to myself this time but as I write and you read, you can pick up the reminder too.
Running regularly means you need to get proper fuel to power the body. Yes, your diet, what you eat is important.
There are many diets, some fads, but also some basics. One the of the most basic facts comes down to a little math. If you eat more than you burn (with exercise) you wil gain weight.
Hence, when you stop running to rest your knee, you also need to start cutting back on your food intake (right,Steve) so you won't put on any weight.
This was part of the discussion amongst the Pacers who gathered for the Cole's tavern run last Thursday. I went for the company and stayed for a drink or two but did not run.
At the Dodge Poetry Festival, I'll need to get some walking in and been mindful of the food intake.
Can't wait to be back running. Less worry about food then.
Do you watch what you eat?
Moving on, I think whats next must come with age and experience, which is also ironic because youd think the older and wiser you got, the braver and more fearless youd be. But you know, I think its the opposite. I think if you manage to find yourself on the right track somehow, sans a slew of overcompensation... the more you know, the more you have to question and even fear, and the more you need people to steady you from time to time. I suppose this is where I found myself when my invincible youth started maturing.

The Norfolk County Pacers use the Big Apple in Wrentham as their starting point for their Sunday runs in the Fall. The scenery is classic New England and the roads can be challenging. This is a nice combination for running a good workout. ... See my Tabblo;

On the track tonight for the workout with the NC Pacers. Two other buddies showed up, one to walk (Achilles problem) and the other to run.
The night was perfect for running. Sun setting coolness, temp dropping into the 60's. Plenty of folks on the track, most walking, some doing their running/jogging, etc.
Coming to the track, I was planning on 3 x 800's. As I warmed up and was the only one doing so, I decided to start with the 800 as planned and the condense the other 2 x 800's into a single mile. I had not run a mile on the track in a while and felt it was about time.
After the Pacer buddies arrived, and got ready, we determined to keep this new plan. The first half was evenly paced at 3:25. (1:42, 1:43). We did a half walk, half jogged one lap for recovery and went into the mile turning quarters at 1:42, 1:45, 1:43, 1:42 for a 6:52 (and negative splits). Not bad for an old guy!
An easy mile warm down completed the workout.
May the roads/trails be kind to you!

You are still in a crowd. You have come out from a tree covered portion of the road as it drops down and opens up to show the Nobska Light ahead and to your left. One of the most picturesque first miles in any races I have run.
You come along a strand and then start the incline shown here and follow the curve of the road around the Nobska Light. Last year it was some Bruce Springsteen playing. This year it was Rocky's Theme. If you are not into running by now, well you should get a check up and step to the side to let others pass.

From the Boston Globe, 8/14/2006; Nearly 10,000 runners wound their way toward the one-mile mark at Nobska Lighthouse yesterday during the 34th annual Falmouth Road Race.

I was in the crowd somewhere. Can you see me? I was wearing my white hat and white NC Pacer shirt. Clearly not the only one with that combination amongst the 10,000 runners. According to the unofficial results, about 8400 runners finished behind me.

Yes, that is moi on the line with a bike. The picture was taken on Saturday when Dolores and I rode out to Wood's Hole via the Shining Sea Bikeway, a glorious and easy ride.
I was on the line on Sunday without the bike to do the 7 mile run to the finish line in Falmouth. It was a great day to run.

The weather is just delightful here the day before the race. This is the 4 mile mark, freshly painted. The camera angle is deceiving and it appears to be on an up hill. It is not, this section is flat along the beach. The sun ahead of us at this point is still rising at about 7:00 AM. It will be higher in the sky and slightly to our right when we get here on race day.
Good luck to all the Falmouth racers!
May the road/trail be kind to you.
The workout format she settled on was highly unorthodox, consisting of 30-second bursts at vVO2max separated by 30-second floats and repeated to failure (that is, until vVO2max can no longer be sustained for 30 seconds). In testing this format Billat found that some runners were able to amass more than 18 total minutes at VO2max, almost one third of it occurring during their jogging recoveries! A group of moderately fit runners increased their VO2max by 10% (that's huge) in just 8-10 weeks when they added twice weekly 30-30 sessions to their training.

Peter, Paul and Mary would sing
If you miss the train I'm on, you will know that I am gone
You can hear the whistle blow a hundred miles,
A hundred miles, a hundred miles, a hundred miles, a hundred miles,
You can hear the whistle blow a hundred miles.
Lord I'm one, lord I'm two, lord I'm three, lord I'm four,
Lord I'm 500 miles from my home.
I am at home but the miles I have run year to date total 504 in 80 days of running. Normally three days a week, I am slightly behind plan to get to 1000 miles this year but if I continue to run healthy, I may still make it.
Ran 7 today with two Pacer buddies. It was hot and humid. Good thing we started early (7:30 AM) trying to do the same thing later would be harder. I like to have fun when I run. Running in this kind of heat is not fun.
Ran well enough to have something let to pick it up for the last half mile and close with a good finish. Still working on fluid replenishment. A small Dunkin Donut's "Strawberry Fruit Coolatta" got me some cold liquid with plenty of sweetness (290 calories for those counting).
The new Dunkin ad campaign could be an intro to get them to help sponsor the club: "America Runs on Dunkin".

I got in a good run in Danville.PA last Sunday and then two good runs (Tuesday and Friday) in Weikert. This ridge was on the south side of the road I ran in Weikert. The road rolled up and down some good slopes as it wound its way amongst woods and farms.
In practical terms, she said, they should do some workouts within hours of having completed their last workout, such that there's not enough time to replenish muscle glycogen stores between workouts, and they should also leave their sports drinks and gels at home for some workouts (that is, intentionally under-fuel their muscles during training).
... athletes are able to perform at a higher level when they consume carbohydrate during training. Going five percent faster or farther in carbohydrate-fueled workouts will itself trigger greater training adaptations of certain kinds than going five percent slower or shorter in under-fueled workouts.
the best training recipe is probably a mixture of fully-fueled and under-fueled workouts. What constitutes the optimal balance between these two workout types is still unknown. You may need to experiment to find out what works best for you.
